When I woke up the next morning, there were no pleasant breakfast aromas to greet me, just chilly air and one hungover houseguest. Woody was nowhere to be seen. I had a good feeling he was still pretty pissed about my conversation with Remy. A sharp stab of headache pain hit between my eyes and I groaned. I wasn’t one to throw a pity party, but it felt like I was really getting it from all sides. Could a girl just have it easy for once?

Without bothering to wake up Remy, I grabbed a pile of halfway-fresh clothes and headed for the dilapidated locker room. The chipped mint-green tiles that covered every inch inside made my stomach turn. They were probably meant to look cheerful, but they sort of just reminded me of boogers.

The ancient pipes were rusty, and they made a horrible groaning sound each time you used them, but they worked. Whether they were part of some long-forgotten system the city had never shut off, I couldn’t say, but I was eternally grateful for the ability to rinse off. Even if it was always freezing and tinged with rust. I was always concerned I smelled faintly of pennies all the time. To be fair, there were worse things to smell like. Either way, it wasn’t exactly a spa treatment. You just sort of had to jump under the spray and get it done as fast as possible.

The shower’s spray was like icy needles on my scalp as the water sluiced through my hair and trickled down my body. My skin was pebbled into achingly hard goosebumps instantly. I hurried through the motions, and was nearly finished when footsteps echoed on the tile behind me. My heart leapt into my throat, and I crouched down toward my discarded clothing and weaponry. There was a reason I never let my weapons out of my sight. As an afterthought, I wrapped my dingy, well-worn towel around myself. If it came down to a fight, it would undoubtedly fall off, but I had to at least make an effort not to get into some hand-to-hand combat totally naked.

The footsteps echoed again, and it was clear they were coming toward the ring of communal showers. I let the water continue to run as I sidled even further toward the room’s walls. With one hand I clutched a knife, and with the other I gripped my towel shut.

Finally, Remy came into view, and the adrenaline and tightening in my throat immediately eased up. He looked around the room and his eyes fell on my crouched, wet form. With a knife raised and my ragged towel, I must have looked like some kind of crazy woman. At least it fit with the asylum setting.

“You!” I hissed. “You’re lucky I didn’t stab first, then check out who it was later.” I furrowed my brow. “Why are you sneaking around while I’m in the shower?”

He held up his hands. “Easy, cher. I’m no pervert. I’m just hungover as hell and not thinkin’ straight.
